            Morata de Tajuña is a municipality and Spanish town in the southeast of the Community of Madrid. The municipal area, located in the valley of the Tajuña River, has a population of 8,115 inhabitants (INE 2023).

History, Nature, Festivals, Gastronomy and Good Wine

One thing to highlight about Morata is its  liveliness. Its terraces, shops and its famous pastry shops, together with the hustle and bustle of its people, give a “neighborhood” atmosphere of the old days, when neighbors knew each other and stopped to chat on every corner. But despite its lively atmosphere, you can still hear the birds and breathe tranquility. Because as its name indicates, the Tajuña River runs alongside it, creating an orchard of freshness and nature.

Its main monument is the 16th century Church of La Concepción, a Renaissance temple with a nave with side chapels, of which the altarpiece of its main altar is worth highlighting. Behind the Town Hall, there is a unique House of Culture that was once owned by the MacCrohon family until it was transferred to the town. But the building most pampered by the neighbors is the hermitage of La Antigua, patron saint of the town, a small construction from the 17th century, built in stone and with an entrance porch where the neighbors dance and sing Los Mayos on April 30. In the past it had an important colony of troglodyte homes, but times and needs change and now few families remain in caves.

Morata del Tajuña, keeps in its memory the battle of Jarama, which took place very close to here. Some routes are being enabled on the ground, in addition, you can visit a curious Museum (recently  clsed  due financial problems) about this battle. Another pleasant space in Morata is the Milling Museum, where the machinery and the entire grinding process and the power of water are taught.

Morata also has a good winery included in the Madrid Wine Route, where tastings of the best wines in the area are held. A separate chapter are its festivities, since one of the best Living Passions in the area is celebrated here, coinciding with Holy Thursday. But one of its most special celebrations is related to Morata's star product: its palmeritas. A delicious sweet, which they make here with a lot of syrup, and which justifies the large number of pastry shops that you will find on the streets of Morata.

And Morata... still has more to offer... the beautiful and pleasant Vía Verde del Tajuña. Two simple walks, along the river path, that we invite you to take, taking advantage of your stay in this lively town.
