WWII, Lincolnshire 3-Bay Pillbox, Nr Lawyers Creek, Holbeach St Matthew.

            The Lincolnshire 3-Bay Pillbox is a variant of the FW3/23 Type-23 Pillbox and is essentially constructed by combining two Type-23 Pillboxes back to back sharing a Central Anti-Aircraft Gun Platform. There are some variations that don't have the Central Anti-Aircraft Gun Platform, it can be a single Anti-Aircraft Gun Platform at one end, or sometimes at either end. Some examples have a solid concrete roof creating a Central Chamber, and another were the roof section forms part of a Porch giving protection to the Entrance. With the exception of one on the Norfolk / Lincolnshire border this 3-Bay Pillbox design is unique to Lincolnshire.
 The Lincolnshire 3-Bay Pillbox is constructed from poured concrete using wood shuttering, meausering approximately 24ft by 10ft with a wall thickness of 18in. There are two Enclosed Chambers with three Loopholes (as with most of the Loopholes in Lincolnshire they always appear in reverse to other areas ?) with concrete Gun Shelves in each. The Central Open Platform has a Gun Mount for a Light Anti-Aircraft Gun. I always find the Entrance to be very narrow, which must have very awkward wearing full Army Kit, but also deters the Enemy.
 The Lincolnshire 3-Bay Pillbox was generally used as part of the Coastal Crust and is found on the seawalls of Lincolnshire. In many cases they are now some distance inland as more farmland has been reclaimed from the sea.
