Naked as We Came

            The dog day cicadas (Neoticiben sp) are easily recognizable with their deep forest green and black patterning across their heads and bodies (as well as deafening choruses nearing the end of summer). However, they look fresh and almost puppy-like when the teneral adults slip out of their nymphal exuviae, with pale minty green and peach coloring and soft shimmering fuzz (pictured). They will only look this way for a few minutes before fully sclerotizing, during which they earn their characteristic dark color and rigid texture. 
I especially love how their 3 ocelli (light detecting simple eye structures at the center of the head) shine like gems.
