            Some good images are the result of careful preparation and a lot of effort, and some happen purely by good fortune and luck. Others, like this one, come about from a bit of both.

 I was in the right spot at the right time, but this merganser and her brood were busily fishing on the far side of the river channel, too far away for any really good image. I was sitting on the riverbank watching them, resigned to the fact that this wasn't likely to produce anything good when suddenly the mother merganser gave a short, urgent  call and her five ducklings immediately gathered around her, climbing onto her back, and they all bee-lined across the channel towards me. An eagle appeared overhead, and this was the cause of her alarm. The eagle flew right past, but this family, now on my side of the channel, swam directly past me, in good light and as close as I could wish

Sometimes it all works out!.
