1806 kaufte Fürst Johann I. von und zu Liechtenstein die im 13. Jahrhundert verlorene Stammburg Liechtenstein in Maria Enzersdorf bei Wien zurück, ließ die umliegenden Berge mit Schwarzföhren aufforsten und gestaltete so den Naturpark Föhrenberge, ein wunderbares Naherholungsbebiet. The amphitheatre is one of several artificial ruins built by Prince Johann Joseph I. of Liechtenstein to enhance the black-pine forest he had planted in 1808. The nature park "Föhrenberge" ("Black-Pine Mountains") he created in the neighbourhood of the ancestral seat Liechtenstein Castle is a wonderful recreation area close to Vienna.
