86609 Laira Open Day 15th September 1991

A packed Laira Depot for a brilliant open day with many visiting locos both preserved and from BR as well as three extra trains to bring enthusiasts to the event. These open days were so well organised and popular and it's such a shame they occur so rarely now on the rail network. My first visit to an open day at Laira was in 1970 when a diesel pullman unit was the star exhibit. A further visit to the open day in 1972 was memorable for 6000 King George V's being the top attraction and the appearence of a hymek on the Paddington - Newquay which then came on to the depot. I have been told that was not connected. My picture shows 86609 at the front of the row with 90132 and D7523 behind and 31405 to the left. A full list of exhibits can be found on this link -
