Elizabeth Line Reflections - a photo on Flickriver

Abbey Wood station at the end of the village high street, whilst it does seem to fit in well at the end of the village high street which is near enough a cul-de-sac now in a way, it certainly is a monster considering the original station as built and shown in the inset photograph of John King’s below - Different world I suppose!

Abbey Wood station as originally built with the iconic level crossing. In the main image it would have been sighted just after the public House and set off the road behind the pub for pick up and drop offs with the crossing right under the new building to the right. Apparently, this area was prone to flooding submerging the railway, crossing and high street, if you turn round and look up the high street, the road climbs out of the village which would explain the run of water into the railway and down the high street, and sometimes some way passed the railway and down the rest of the road after prolonged torrential rain fall!

ELIZABETH LINE - A new station is born:
Abbey Wood is the terminus of one of two eastern branches of the Elizabeth Line and offers interchange between terminating Elizabeth Line services (at 12 trains per hour on a new line) and existing South-eastern and Thameslink services. The Elizabeth Line provides a link north west to ExCeL London and Canary Wharf, then onwards to the city centre, Heathrow Airport and Reading. The first station opened on the line in 1849 and was a typical South Eastern Railway brick building with metal platform shelters. The station has been rebuilt twice over the past 50 years to cater for the changing nature of the area.  In 1987 a new station was constructed which, in 2014, was replaced by Network Rail with an interim station whilst the new Crossrail station was constructed. The new station opened on 23 October 2017.  It was designed by architects Fereday Pollard and includes step free interchange between platforms and bus connections with the Harrow Manorway, a bridge was built to replace the level crossing which caused extreme delays. Today the road runs next to the ticket hall which is situated on the second floor of the station building complex as seen in the above photograph. Bus stops are close by and for cyclists there is a rack designed to store bikes which is situated on the bridge parapet under a roof in what could be an considered a rather exposed spot regards the weather.
