Currawong - a photo on Flickriver

Currawong

            Pied Currawong (Strepera graculina).

Currawongs look like corvids (crows, ravens, etc), but they are actually in the Artamidae family (Australian magpies, butcherbirds, choughs, woodswallows, etc). The name "Currawong" ("curra" rhymes with "thorough") is said to be derived from the sound of its haunting, melodic song.

Pied Currawongs have increased in numbers and range in recent years. That is bad news for other birds, as they are aggressive nest-raiders. They are contributing to the decline of many small-medium birds in eastern Australia.
