Port of Barcelona

            The port of Barcelona, as seen from the Montjuic Mountain. Known as a settlement since 2500 BC, Barcelona became a Roman colony in 218 BC, with a fortress built on the Montjuic Mountain. During Caesar Augustus rule (14 AD), the name Barcino was formalized while the grid plan castrum moved to where Barri Gothic is now located. Under the Romans, Barcino was less important than nearby towns like Tarragona or Zaragoza but gradually its influence grew. At the start of the 5th century, Visigoths invaded southern Gaul and reached across the Pyrenees. Having driven the Romans out, the Visigoths remained in control for the next three hundred years. King Ataulf and his wife Galla Placidia, the daughter of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, established their court in Barcino (the name of the city had many versions over time until arriving at the modern Barcelona). The Goths were forced to move by the Moors who captured Barcelona in 718 only to cede it to the Franks in 801. Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, formed the County of Barcelona as a part of the Carolingian Empire. The county gradually absorbed nearby territories until it was integrated into the Crown of Aragon through the marriage between Count Ramon Berenguer III and Petronila, the daughter of Ramiro II of Aragon. Rapid expansion of the Crown of Aragon made Barcelona one of the most important cities in the Mediterranean. Barcelona was the de facto capital but after Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabel I of Castile had united their kingdoms, the city went into a decline. The War of Spanish Succession left Barcelona on the wrong side of the alliances and the city lost its economic privileges and virtually went bankrupt. It was not until the middle of the 19th century when Barcelona returned on the ascending curve. Major urban redevelopments were undertaken, with a brand new Eixample district emerged as one of the most striking cases of city planning and urban design. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, Barcelona became one of the cities where the modernist movement developed with more strength and personality. Painters, designers and architects left an indelible mark on the city that has forever marked the idiosyncrasy of Barcelona. One of the greatest exponents of Catalan modernism was Antoni Gaudí whose buildings, including the Sagrada Familia, are now easily recognizable city landmarks. Nowadays, Barcelona is a modern, open and tolerant city, converted, by its own merits, into a cosmopolitan capital [June 1, 2017].
