The Atlantic Ocean at Foz do Douro, Porto. The second-largest city in Portugal, Porto is strategically located in the estuary of the Douro River and at the Atlantic coast. Inhabited at least since 300 BC by Celtic tribes, the city grew as an important commercial port flourishing from the trade between Lisbon and Braga. Under the Suebi and later the Visigoths, Porto played a major part in the Christian expansion into the northern parts of the Iberian Peninsula. The Moors gained control over Porto in 711 but their rule was shorter than in other parts of Hispania, as already in 868 they were driven away by Vimara Peres, an Asturian count from Gallaechia. The settlement of Portus Cale, later referred to as Portucale, was the origin for the modern name of Portugal. In 1387, John of Gaunt sent his daughter, Phillippa of Lancaster, to Porto where she became the wife of John I of Portugal. The wedding laid the foundation for the long-standing military and political alliance between Portugal and England. The English were also instrumental in inventing port wine, which would become the main export Porto is famous for. The city grew as a port and a shipbuilding center. It was from Porto that Prince Henry the Navigator embarked on the exploration mission to Morocco and the western coast of Africa in 1415, initiating what is known as the Portuguese Age of Discovery. Porto is known for its postcard views from across the Douro, with the fortress-like 12th-century cathedral, Torre dos Clérigos and the Episcopal Palace dominating the cityscape. Ponte D. Luis I, a magnificent double-deck arch bridge, was built in 1886 to the design by by Théophile Seyrig, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel. A railway bridge nearby was designed by Eiffel himself. The historic center of Porto received a UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1996.
