PRORA: The longest building of the Nazi measures four and a half kilometers. On the island of Rügen, on 2 May 1936, the Nazi Organization, "Kraft durch Freude, KdF" (Strength through Joy), laid the foundation stone for the holiday resort in Prora, which consists of eight consecutive identical blocks of houses. This is one of the few monumental projects of the Nazi, which has at least partly been realized. The facility on the Baltic Sea between the villages of Binz and Sassnitz, designed primarily by the architect Clemens Klotz, impressively documents the megalomania of the Hitler era. In Prora, the German worker is expected to recover at a favorable price and refuel. The complex, just 150 meters from the beach, is designed for 20,000 people.
The Second World War, however, prevents the use of Prora as a holiday resort. In 1939 only the carcass was finished, but not the swimming pools, the large hall and most of the buildings. It is also planned to have a marshalling yard and quayside facilities. The Nazis stop the construction work at the beginning of the war. They use Prora as a training center for airmen and a police battalion. From 1944 onwards, it was used as a military hospital.
After the Soviet Union took control of Rügen in May 1945, the facility was used for the internment of landowners and continued to accommodate home displaced from the former Eastern territories. Between 1948 and 1953 the Red Army used the buildings. Later the National Army (NVA) of the GDR enters the plant. The surrounding area has become the restricted area for decades. Up to 10,000 NVA soldiers are stationed in Prora.
The southernmost part of the complex is available to members of the NVA and border groups as a recreation center, children's holiday camp and holiday resort.
After German reunification in 1990, the Bundeswehr took over the facility, but stopped using it at the end of 1992 and left Prora.
In 1994, Prora was placed under monument protection.
Building parts are gradually being sold and then renovated. In the complex are now several property and holiday apartments as well as a hotel.
