En tant que grand consommateur de petits rongeurs, particulièrement de campagnols, il est un auxilliaire précieux en agriculture en limitant leurs populations, même s'il est débordé par leur abondance lors des pullulations épisodiques. Mais il n'est pas seul.
Il est bien connu, et reconnu comme tel, au vol stationnaire de chasse qu'il pratique systématiquement, en particulier au-dessus des talus de routes, connus pour être des repères de rongeurs. Ce vol typique est appelé "vol en Saint-Esprit". Il lui permet de compenser l'absence de postes d'affût élevés dans les secteurs riches en petits mammifères.

As a major consumer of small rodents, especially voles, it is a valuable auilliary in agriculture by limiting their populations, even if it is overwhelmed by their abundance during episodic outbreaks. But he is not alone.
It is well known, and recognized as such, to the hovering chase that it practices systematically, especially over road embankments, known to be rodent landmarks. This typical flight is called "flight in the Holy Ghost." It allows it to compensate for the lack of high-level lookout positions in areas rich in small mammals.
