That's A Wrap

The warm afternoon light finds us at our last spot some 110 miles south of where we started in Richmond town. Enfield is a sad but hauntingly beautiful little dot on the map in Halifax County. Rich with props, the virtually abandoned downtown strip featured a lone stop light for no one but ghosts was unlike any place I've ever been. The little town of under 2000 was once the world’s largest raw peanut market, but has fallen on hard times. It has seen a precipitous drop of over 25% of its residents between the 2010 and 2020 census which certainly helps to explain the countless boarded up storefronts. The town has an overwhelming majority minority population that is 85% black with an astonishing 34% of residents living below the poverty line. I share all this to help give you a little sense of the place, since it couldn't be further removed than the hip and wealthy metro Richmond area where our day began.

What drew us to this spot was the historic crossing watchman's tower at the corner of Whitfield and Main Streets across the double main from the circa 1923 Atlantic Coast Line depot which has been owned by the town since 1979. Thought to be the last of its kind still standing in the state the poured concrete structure was built in 1925. Less than 20 minutes after I031 passed our G693-30 that we'd been following all day hustled south at MP 101 on Main 1 of modern day CSXT's North End sub. We'd bid farewell here and start the long drive back to Alexandria that we'd break up with dinner and beers (and a few more trains!) after dark in Ashland concluding a truly fabulous day along a stretch of railroad I'd long wanted to explore!
