            Five year old Radhika Lodha (L) hugs her two and half year old brother Anurag Lodha (R) as the wait for their mid day meal at the Anganwadi centre in village Hilgna, district Guna in Madhya Pradesh.Despite being one of the most mineral rich states in India, with vast hoards of diamonds, Madhya Pradesh is one of the poorest with 40% of its population living in poverty. The state also has some of the worst development statistics in India. Of every 1000 births in Madhya Pradesh -  310 mothers will die, while 59 new-borns will die for every 1000 live births - one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country, and compares starkly with Kerala for example where 14 infants will die out of 1000 live births. These tragic statistics are far worse still in the most remote and marginalised communities of Scheduled Castes, Tribes and other marginalised people. AdivasiÕs (Scheduled Tribes) like Sati, and other excluded groups in Madhya Pradesh have some of the worst maternal health care statistics: 48% of women (14-18 years) are underweight with a Body Mass Index of 18.5kg/sq. , and 42.9% of rural women in Shivpuri district have children while they are still children themselves - aged between 15-19. While 82.6% of Adivasi children (6-36 months), and 58% of pregnant women suffer from anaemia . 70.3% of scheduled tribe women in Madhya Pradesh anaemic . UNICEF India/ 2013/ Manpreet Romana..
