Priya Gajanand Dadanje, 3, attend her class at Anganwadi center in Jamb village. The Hindi word Anganwadi literally means a courtyard. This space acts as a one-stop hub for the government to provide pre-primary school facilities to all children under the age of six years. Anganwadis come under the Central government’s Integrated Child Development Scheme. It is through them that the state delivers ECCE or Early Childhood Care and Education, a need and right of every child under the age of 6 years as guaranteed by the Constitution of India. Teachers or Anganwadi Workers (AWW) as they are called, focus on building every child’s psycho-social and cognitive competencies using the techniques of storytelling, songs, dance and games to teach lessons. UNICEF has provided technical and financial support to MSCERT to develop Teacher Handbooks (called Bal Shikshan Hasta Pustika to help teachers teach the curriculum to students) and training modules for Anganwadi Supervisors and AWWs.
