Le vol fantomatique de la belle Dame blanche / The ghostly flight of the beautiful White Owl

            L'Effraie des clochers (nommée maintenant Effraie d'Amérique) est facilement reconnaissable par son disque facial en forme de coeur. Elle est la chouette qui a le plus suscité les craintes et les croyances mystiques ou diaboliques. D'ailleurs elle tire son nom des émissions sonores bizarres qu'elle émet. Contrairement aux autres hiboux et chouettes qui hululent ou sifflent elle émet un chuintement grincant et criard. Ses cris stridents ascendants peuvent en effrayer plus d'un la nuit!

Comme son nom l'indique elle niche dans les clochers d'églises, les granges ou les bâtiments abandonnés. Elle peut aussi utiliser un arbre creux ou un nichoir. Son vol fantomatique qui serait le vol le plus silencieux de tous les oiseaux de la planète ajoute aussi à son aura mystérieuse

L’Effraie des clochers est le seul membre de la famille des Tytonidés en Amérique du Nord. Elle niche et est résidente toute l'année dans le sud de la Colombie-Britannique et de l'Ontario. Elle serait en voie de disparition au Canada.

The Barn Owl is easily recognized by its heart-shaped facial disc. It is the owl that has most aroused fears and mystical or diabolical beliefs. Moreover, it takes its name, in french, from the bizarre sound it makes. Unlike other owls which hoot or whistle, it emits a squeaky and screaming hiss. Its shrill, ascending cries can frighten many people at night!

As its name suggests, it nests in church bell towers, barns or abandoned buildings. The owl can also use a hollow tree or a nest box. Its ghostly flight, which is said to be the quietest flight of all birds on the planet, also adds to its mysterious aura.

The Barn Owl is the only member of the Tytonidae family in North America. It breeds and is a year-round resident in southern British Columbia and Ontario. It is said to be endangered in Canada.
