Iceland Day 8 - Love the Rain - a photo on Flickriver

And with this shot of the famous church in Reykjavik, this series has come to an end. 52 photographs and almost as many different stories. And this one was no exception. In fact I didn’t think I would come home with a decent shot of this place at all! As beautiful as it is, it also was very busy during the afternoon. But while my companions where buying some souvenirs in the centre, I decided to give it a try. And it was pretty hopeless, although I immediately loved this foreground textures and basically knew the shot I wanted to take, there were so many people walking around that I had to look further. Getting closer to the church was an option, but they were also busy doing renovations there, and the fences that had been set up, spoiled the whole composition. Then, just at the point of giving up, rain started pouring down, and a lot. Everyone started looking for a shelter, and I knew this was my opportunity. The blue patches of sky that were coming towards me, meant I was on a very tight schedule. I set up my gear with an umbrella above my head, and then started moving inch by inch, and later millimetre by millimetre in all directions, trying to get the perfect position. The first light after the shower was coming through, and I quickly made a couple of shots. In that way I’m able to mask out the few people that were still moving in the frame in photoshop. Yet I also needed the new (quite amazing) remove tool for the last distractions, but after some work I now have this clean shot of the square and the church in the background on what was a very crowded place. So with this small story you’ll probably understand why I am so happy with this shot and why I think it’s a worthy ending!

It was another capture that I couldn’t have taken without a bit of luck, and that was also a part of the story from this entire trip. True story, at the day we left Iceland there was a code red active in almost the entire island, with rain, snowfall and extreme wind gusts, and a lot of highlights even became inaccessible due to road closures. This made us realise even more how wonderful this week had been, where many times things just seemed to fall in place.

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to view my photos and read along with my little adventures. This means a lot to me and is the reason why I spend quite some time on it (especially with the storytelling because English isn’t exactly my forte!) There will be some more photos of the trip in the future, but often they are more of the same subjects and are not contributing to the album at this time. So that’s it for now and if anyone is still in doubt whether or not to go this way there are three words I would like to say: Go, go, go!
