stylised chess set

            king 1.75" / 45mm
brass and aluminium
a one-off "homemade" set from the 1970s.
turned from solid brass and aluminium at the old vickers armstrong armaments factory, scotswood road, newcastle.

i set the pieces up without too much thought and now think i have the knight and bishop around the wrong way. i now feel the maker intended to represent the bishop by the chalice shaped piece, with the raised edge echoing the bishop's mitre.
