Fair winds and following seas Farley Mowat (1921-2014).

A man not without controversy, there's a lot to be said about Farley Mowat, but the one thing that can not be denied is that the man knew how to tell a story. He wasn't afraid to offend and tell it as he saw it.  Farley died last week at the age of 92.  

When he first entered my consciousness, as a kid, in the 70's I thought him a bit of a free spirit anti-establishment, tree hugging, environmentalist type.  So all the more my surprise in the 80's when I first read his book "The Regiment" about his time as a Platoon officer, and then intelligence officer, of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment during World War II.  He was a strong believer in a civilian militia/reserve to counter-balance the bureaucracy/careerism of a standing Army.  The "Hasty Ps" couldn't have had a better ambassador of the citizen-soldier than Farley Mowat.  And I, as a kid, could not have had a better author to stir my interest about the Canadian wild.
