Vieux port français - a photo on Flickriver

            Fort-Dauphin (Madagascar) - Quand je prends cette photo du vieux port colonial, je suis à quelques encablures de l’hôtel de ville, auquel je tourne le dos. On peut dire que le petit port est pratiquement en centre-ville. Malgré des infrastructures modestes, l’ancien port français a longtemps participé au développement économique de la région de Fort-Dauphin. Cette porte ouverte sur l’Océan Indien a commencé à décliner en 2009, lorsque les Canadiens ont commencé à exploiter l’ilménite - un minerai de titatne-, dans la mine à ciel ouvert de Mandena. Cette mise en exploitation a nécessité la construction d’un port en eau profonde à une dizaine de kilomètres au sud de la ville ; à proximité du site minier.
Après avoir été plus ou moins abandonné, le vieux port du centre-ville reprend du service avec l’ouverture d’une ligne de cabotage pour marchandises diverses avec la ville de Tamatave, au nord de la Grande-île.

Old French port

Fort-Dauphin (Madagascar) - When I take this photo of the old colonial port, I am a stone's throw from the town hall to which I turn my back. We can say that the small port is practically in the city center. Despite modest infrastructure, the former French port has long participated in the economic development of the Fort-Dauphin region. This open door to the Indian Ocean began to decline in 2009, when Canadians began exploiting ilmenite - a titanium ore - in the Mandena open-cast mine.
This exploitation required the construction of a larger deep-water port about ten kilometers south of the city; near the extraction site.
After being more or less abandoned, the old port in the city center has returned to service with the opening of a cabotage line for general cargo with the port of Tamatave, in the north of the Big Island.
