Retour à Fort-Dauphin - a photo on Flickriver

            Ankaramena (Madagascar) - Trois heures sur le petit marché aux zébus d’Ankaramena, c’est bien suffisant. Rien à voir avec le rassemblement d’Ambalavao, à quelques centaines de kilomètres à l’ouest de Fort-Dauphin, où se réunissent deux fois par semaine plus d’un millier de têtes de bétail. Ambalavao est considéré comme le plus grand marché au zébus du pays. A chaque fois que j’y vais, j’y passe quasiment une semaine, c’est un paradis pour les photographes.
La photo ci-dessus a été prise quelques kilomètres après avoir quitté le marché d’Ankaramena. Direction de Fort-Dauphin. Quand je suis venu la première fois sur ce petit marché en 2019, la piste était dans un piteux état et nous avions mis plus d’une heure et demie pour parcourir une cinquantaine de kilomètres. Cette fois, en un peu moins d'une heure, nous étions arrivés à destination. La piste a été améliorée grâce aux travaux, toujours en cours, réalisés par une grande entreprise française de BTP. Cependant, il ne faut pas s'attendre à voir une route asphaltée à l'européenne. C'est toujours de la piste, mais elle a été élargie à certains endroits et les ornières nivelées. C’est peut-être un détail pour vous, mais pour les malgaches ça veut dire beaucoup.

Ankaramena (Madagascar) - Three hours in the small zebu market in Ankaramena is quite enough. We are not at the Ambalavao gathering, a few hundred kilometers west of Fort-Dauphin, where more than a thousand head of cattle gather twice a week. Ambalavao is considered the largest zebu market in the country. Every time I go there, I spend almost a week there, it’s a photographer’s paradise.
The photo above was taken a few kilometers after leaving the Ankaramena market towards Fort-Dauphin. When I came there the first time in 2019, the track was in poor condition and it took us more than an hour and a half to cover around fifty kilometers. This time, in just under an hour, we had arrived at our destination. The track has improved thanks to the work, still in progress, carried out by a large French construction company. However, you should not expect to see a European-style asphalt road. It's still track, but it has been widened in places and the ruts leveled.
