            Strelitzia reginae, llamada popularmente ave del paraíso, es una especie herbácea originaria de Sudáfrica. Se cultiva extensamente como planta ornamental por la forma peculiar de su flor.
La planta ave del paraíso, también conocida como flor de pájaro o planta de pájaros de fuego, es una imponente mata que puede alcanzar una altura de hasta 2 metros. Tiene un tallo largo, del que emergen unas hojas de vainas alargadas que lo recubren con un color verde vivo.

Al final de su tallo se encuentra un pico del que surgen flores, que en un juego de bellos colores se forman con tres sépalos de color naranja rojizos y unos pétalos entre azul y violeta.

Las flores ave del paraíso se caracterizan porque se mantienen frescas y bellas por un periodo largo en los floreros. Su duración media es de dos semanas, sin embargo, pueden mantener sus colores vivos hasta por 18 días. Esto las hace muy deseadas para la ornamentación. Con su belleza otorgan un toque exótico y tropical a los ambientes.
