A sad story

            An album leaf the princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh decorated while mourning for her brother Alfred (1874 - 1899). Alfred had married an irish commoner and his mother insisted that the marriage must be annulled. So he shot himself. While his family celebrated the silver wedding of his parents (see the other Coburg-photographs on this stream), Alfred laid deadly injured in a lonely room in the Coburg Palace. The guests were told that he was suffering from tuberculosis. Three years ago, Alfred had even saved his sister Marie's (Marie of Romania) life. While being at Ilinskoe in Russia, Marie was swimming in a river and a strong current caught her and she was about to drown when Alfred grabbed her and pulled her out of the cold water.
The swastika-like ornaments are also visible on some jewelry of the Edinburgh princesses. Not to be mistaken for the later Nazi symbols.
