Walking to Cramond Island - a photo on Flickriver

            Located near Edinburgh, Scotland this island in the River Forth is popular with visitors, However, much care is required to avoid being cut off by the tides!  Several people can be seen here on the causeway.

Coastguards recommend that the crossing is only attempted during the two hours either side of low water.

The Island las a long history.

There is some evidence that prehistoric people lived on the island and later to that it appears that the Romans also were interested in the island, having a fort nearby.

Much more recently, during the two World Wars the causeway was erected to deter submarines and other vessels and several large gun emplacements appeared on and near the island. Many of those installations are still there today.  The famous Forth bridge and Rosyth Dockyard are not far away.
