Rain in the valley

            “Dom, you might want to turn around!” We had been photographing the snow-capped mountains for about 15 minutes when I happened to glance over my shoulder. A band of rain, back lit by the sun, was drifting across the valley from where we had just driven up from. As a bit of a geek who loves, amongst other things Sci-Fi, I thought it looked exactly like a transporter beam from some alien mother ship sweeping across the land, beaming up any and all wildlife lol. Both Dom and I swung our cameras around and started to photograph this amazing sight. In the far off distance you can see the snow-covered mountains of another national park - Jotunheimen - that we visited a few days later on. It didn’t disappoint. I couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that we were still at the carpark and being treated to some amazing scenery! As I stood there I wanted to incorporate the foreground more into the scene so I lowered my tripod legs to include the barren grasses in front of me. I started to bend down to access my camera when my right knee gave way.

During the morning outing at Ulafossen I had felt something twinge in my knee and mentioned this to Dom on our way back to the cabin for lunch. But now, all of a sudden, I had this incredibly sharp pain knifing through my knee. I half collapsed, using my tripod to support me. It was a struggle just to push myself up. Standing was OK as long as I shifted most of my weight onto my left leg. Walking was bearable but far from easy. We still had five or so hours, and the same number of kilometers to walk, before we would call it a day. I really did struggle for the rest of the afternoon, at times sluggishly following Dom to locations, and other times plodding ahead slowly only to be caught up. It was a fantastic afternoon with photo opportunities galore but it wasn’t until we got back to the cabin that night that I saw and realised my knee was going to play quite a major role in the coming days’ photographic shenanigans.
