The Bridge Without A Name - a photo on Flickriver

            Creation (2012) by Chinese artist/activist Ai Weiwei in the Middelheim open-air Museum in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Middelheim Museum asked Ai Weiwei to build a bridge. 
              The artist gladly accepted the invitation. It seemed a challenge to him, he had never built a bridge before. Because the artist uses materials sparingly, he recycled an existing bridge in the sculpture park for his project. For 'The Bridge With No Name', the original deck of the bridge was replaced by planks that together form the contours of China, his homeland with which Ai Weiwei has both a problematic and passionate relationship. 
The bridge is reminiscent of traditional bridges in Eastern drawings, but also makes us reflect on the implications of (symbolically) crossing a bridge. ‘What impact does China have on its environment?’. ‘And under what conditions is a connection still possible?’.
