I'm paraphrasing the quote, but the gist of it is the same, I think. If Mark has a problem with that, he is free to correct me, but I won't be holding my breath.

One of the things that I do love about photography, is the way it allows us to freeze an image of a fleeting event, and allows us to savor that moment in a way that almost no other medium allows. 

Painting comes close, and has other advantages, such as reconstructing heroic moments that may or may not have ever happened, or that compress many moments into a single frame in a way that even photography can't. 

Unfortunately, most of us don't have the talent or the vision, let alone the time to create paintings of heroic moments. So we take pictures, and project onto them our memories, or simply savor the tiny slice of life that passed during that hundredth of a second..
