No3 MkII 6x20 Binoculars, HF Purser & Brother, 1918

A pair of No3 MkII 6x20 binoculars produced by one of the smaller manufacturers of WW1, HF Purser & Brother of Charles Street, Hatton Garden, London. They are of the Zeiss construction. The No3 model was declared obsolete in 1936.

They are marked on the left rear prism housing with graticule details (but no graticule present), and “Binocular Prismatic/No3 Magn 6 MkII/No 7- remainder illegible”, and on the right rear housing “HF Purser & Brother/London/1918”. Both forward prism housings have large broad arrows. Individually, each tube is very clear, but the collimation is out; mechanically they are in good condition. The case, possibly original, has been painted black at some time.

In June 1918, Henry F Purser & Brother received an order from the War Office for the supply of 600 No3 MkI (no graticule fitted) binoculars, later increased to 1120. By February 1919, they had supplied 349 pairs when the War Office ended the contract, paying the firm £1754 compensation. (Terence Weyland - tedbrink.webs.com/gb-british-makers-ww1). There is no mention of No3 MkII binoculars, i.e. fitted with a graticule.

Henry F Purser were opticians before WW1. After the war they manufactured cinematographic projection lenses, binoculars and field glasses, exhibiting at the 1922 British Industries Fair at The White City, London. In 1922 they became a limited company, but were dissolved in 1923.
