The Porta Nigra in Trier is the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps. Its name is medieval and goes back to the black pollution patina on the gray sandstone. The gate dates back to AD 170 and was built from huge stone blocks (each up to 6 tons weight) put together without mortar. Instead, two stones each were held together horizontally by iron clamps whose bent ends were embedded in corresponding holes by molten lead. Over time, people drilled holes and the metal parts were broken out of the walls to retrieve them for reuse. Traces of this destruction are clearly visible on the north side of the gate. The medieval Greek monk Simeon lived in a cell of the ruins as a hermit and was canonized after his death. A number of recesses in the front of the gate result from the custom of pilgrims to scrape off sand from the walls. When Simeon died, the gate was overbuilt and used as a double church, and thereby the stone blocks were spared a recycling. On his visit to Trier in 1804, Napoleon ordered that the Porta Nigra be converted back to its Roman form, which was finished 1817 under Prussian rule. Inside the gate, Roman stone masons’ marks, date inscriptions, and some traces of the double church are visible.
