Van Hool Astromega TD824 Advert - a photo on Flickriver

            Van Hool launched the T8 family of coaches in 1980, comprising of body on chassis and Integral single-deck,  deck and a half and  double-deck coaches. The star of the range was the 12-metre three-axle Astromega TD824 double-deck coach which was powered  by a rear mounted 14.6-litre Mercedes-Benz  V8 OM422A turbocharged diesel engine producing 330bhp. The standard transmission was a ZF 4S-150GP 8-speed 4 over 4 synchromesh gearbox with the option of a 4-speed Allison DP8962 automatic gearbox. The Astromega was a very expensive coach compared to the Neoplan Skyliner which was the first Integral double-deck coach in the world and introduced in 1967. Only 30 T8 Van Hool Astromega TD824 coaches were sold in the UK, Park's of Hamilton and Southend Transport were the largest customers.  My photograph is from the Coachmart trade magazine showing an advert for the Astromega for Bakers of Western-super-Mare  registered A242 UTC and was new in June 1984. The same operator also had a Van  Hool Astrobel on a Volvo B10MT chassis.

The first Neoplan Skyliners in the UK entered service in late 1981 with Trathens of Yelverton. In total only 271 Skyliner coaches were registered in the UK between 1981-2008, one was assembled by Carlton PSV the UK Neoplan dealer. Plaxton bodied 31 Neoplan Skyliner underframes. Neoplan ceased selling the Skyliner in the UK after 2008. The latest Van Hool Astromega is still sold in the UK.
