Sprite Group over the Greek islands - a photo on Flickriver

A group of Red Sprites with halo (faint red disk), on Feb. 12-13, 2024, over thunderstorms at the Aegean Sea. Halos occur due to the same mechanism responsible for sprites, appear higher than them, at 70–85 km, last for some ms, and look like faint red disks with a typical diameter of less than 100 km. Observe the lower tendrils of the sprite group, converging towards the thundercloud (bright lightning flash below). This convergence follows from the convergence of the temporary electric field lines towards the thundercloud. The small white lights at the bottom of the frame, come from the islands of Andros, Tinos and Mykonos.

TLEs (like red sprites) are upper atmospheric electrical discharges and they appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).

I've used a #Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 40 k iso.
