Unfortunately, vultures are unfairly reviled and misunderstood.  Due to persecution, all 16 African species are endangered or critically endangered.  This is catastrophic as they are essential to maintaining a functioning and healthy ecosystem - forming part of the 'clean-up crew'.  In areas where they have been most heavily persecuted, disease has risen dramatically among animals and, as a result, in some humans too.  Vultures in Africa continue to be killed illegally for their body parts for traditional medicine and superstition (being thought in some communities to be harbingers of death).  The drug diclofenac is used to poison carcasses to deliberately kill scores, sometimes hundreds, of vultures at a time.  Shockingly, across Africa, poaching has caused a 70% decline in breeding pairs since 2004.
