1951 BR Oyster brake van, DB 933707

            The British Rail 16 ton Oyster brake van, DB 993707, arrived at the North Norfolk Railway, fully operational, in 2019 from the Churnet Valley Railway, who had restored it between 2011-2014.
A brake van is a wagon at the rear of a goods train for the purpose of adding extra braking force to a train. Brake vans are operated by a brakeman who would sit with a handbrake, his job was to provide extra braking for a train, for example when it was going down a gradient, and as an emergency hand brake. Brakemen are also in charge of making sure that the trains rear lights are in the correct place because at night a signalman would need to see the tail-lights to know that the train had not split, so to allow him to clear the line. Most vans had both normal brakes and vacuum brakes. They also contained a fire for the comfort of the brakeman.
