What happened? - a photo on Flickriver

What happened?

            Navajo Sandsstone at the entrance to the Wave, where somehow, in Jurassic time (the time of the dinosaurs), these dune-deposited sands underwent severe deformation that destroyed the otherwise orderly bedding to either side, prior to lithification.  Earthquake?  Slope instability?  Shear displacement?  Whatever the cause, it is a geologic fascination, one of many to be found at Coyote Buttes North, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, Arizona.
