Welcome to the seabed........ - a photo on Flickriver

            It is beginning to snow, it is cold and there is a freezing northwest wind blowing heavily in the trees that stand beside the basalt-clad hill.
This former seawall was the mouth of the six-kilometer-long "Zwolse Diep" a canal that allowed larger ships to pass as far as the city of Zwolle.
The canal consisted of two pipe dams that emptied into the open sea at the site of the former light beacon on the end of the dam.
Behind the former pipe dam near the trees was a refuge harbor that could accommodate 70 ships if they were unable to proceed due to stormy conditions.
So called "Kraggen" were used as a carpet pad for the pipe dams. These were floating strips of tightly grown sods of reeds and water plants that were sunk to the bottom of the Zuiderzee by clay and sand and later reinforced by basalt blocks.
The width of the channel between the pipe dams was 120 meters.
One of the very first villages of the reclaimed land the "Noord Oostpolder" was named after the use of the technique to realize the carpet pad of the pipe dams and it was given the name "Kraggenburg".
The old beacon at the end of the dam marked the entrance to the channel of the "Zwolse Diep"on the high seas.
