St Augustine’s Church Ramsgate The church was designed by the famous architect Augustus Welby Pugin for the Catholics of Ramsgate and as a memorial to the landing in Thanet in 597 of St Augustine, who was sent by Pope Gregory the Great to convent the Angles. It was built at his personal expense, beginning in 1846, after his home, The Grange, next door, had been completed. He died in 1852 when the church was still unfinished, so his son Edward Pugin built the cloisters. The church still lacks the spire designed for the central tower. The church is a famous of Victorian Gothic architecture, a revival of the Gothic style that flourished in the Middle Ages. Pugin was the architect who spearheaded the Gothic Revival in England.
