a weed is a flower until it isn't - a photo on Flickriver

            With all due respect to the venerable George Washington Carver, haha! I've always been very fond of old masonry or brickwork with cobblestones, a historical style that seems more commonplace the further east you head in the continental United States. Cobblestones that came over from Europe in ships' ballast were used to pave streets! These steps and retaining wall in Wallingford a couple months ago took my breath away. I'd like to do this myself on just a short section of lower wall in my yard. I also want to make a birdbath using this technique.

I can't really tell if this is old work or newer, I'm not sure why it was even a question in my mind. I'm ninety percent sure it's old. If it's as old as I suspect, I'm surprised it's held together as well as it has. There are some significant, quite fatal-appearing cracks in parts of the wall but it's held together! I like how they didn't get too fine with the mortar. It's a little on the sloppy side in some places, but I think that's part of the wabi sabi-like charm.
