Wheal Coates...Towanroath Engine House

            Wheal Coates is a former tin mine situated on the north coast of Cornwall, England, UK, on the cliff tops between Porthtowan and St Agnes. It is preserved and maintained by the National Trust.
The Wheal Coates mine opened in 1802 and was worked until its closure in 1889. It was re-opened for a short period between 1911 and 1913 when it was finally closed.

The site is most notable for its three engine houses and in particular the iconic Towanroath Shaft engine house, which is now a Grade II listed building. The whole site is in the care of the National Trust (as is the adjacent Chapel Porth beach).

The dramatic clifftop scenery and iconic engine houses of this section of the North Cornish coast have served as a backdrop for many a horse riding scene all through the Poldark series. The cliffs here are home to one of Cornwall's best known old mining engine houses - Wheal Coates - which was a well known view long before the latest Poldark adaptation.

Wheal Coates is made up of three engine houses. The most famous of which perches close to the cliff edge within reach of the Atlantic swell. Towanroath Engine House has to be one of Cornwall’s most iconic mining relics. It’s dramatic setting was once of course a practical one. It held the beam engine that was used to pump water out of the deeper levels of this mine. The tunnels here ran out a great distance beneath the sea.

The surviving buildings date from the 1870s when deep underground mining began at the site and were stabilised and preserved in 1986. There are three engine houses that formerly housed Cornish engines. Towanroath Pumping Engine House (1872) was used to pump water from the adjacent 600 ft Towanroath shaft. There are two Whim engine houses which were used to crush ore for processing. "Old Whim" was built in the mid 19th century, while "New Whim" was built in the late 19th century. A calciner dating from 1910–1913 when the mine was reopened, roasted the tin to remove impurities such as arsenic.

The mine workings are said to be haunted by the ghosts of miners who died while working here.

Whenever I walk here I always think of the men who worked below ground here and at all the other mines and possibly hardly took in the view.. certainly not like we do....
