Flaming Duck Dives Under Water - a photo on Flickriver

            This morning as dawn's colours were filling the sky, I noticed a Surf Scoter, prowling the shoreline.  When he dove, his tailfeathers lit up from the early rays of sunlight.  

While admiring this, I heard a small voice calling out cheekily from under the waves.  "You swim like a log... your mother was a Seagull! ..."

Ignoring the taunts, the scoter pretended to look up at the sky as if in search of some heavenly intervention and then suddenly dove beneath the surface.

About 30 seconds later, the scoter arose from the deep with a prize in it's mouth.  I heard mumblings like "you mother doesnnnnnnn" and then nothing.

A not so good a day to be a smart aleck crustacean ... but another very good day to be a duck.

When I reviewed the photograph I was amazed at the tail feathers riding the sea but still worshipped that lens that caught the moment ... for this is why we live ... to capture a moment of reality :)
