The Young Scholar - a photo on Flickriver

The Young Scholar

            Same daughter as in 'Softness', same spot, twelve or so years later.

Once again, the negative is gone, and this is only an iPhone photograph (slightly cropped) of an 8x6" commercial print made from a colour reversal film negative, most likely Kodak Gold 100. The original was shot with a half-frame Olympus Pen FT SLR camera, which usually had the F3.5 50-90mm zoom lens fitted for this sort of work.

This is a ‘candid’ photograph, not so much in all senses of being “taken informally, especially without the subject’s knowledge”, but more in the sense of being “truthful, straightforward; frank” (ODE). Though genuinely studying, my daughter, moving her eyes only, looked up without artifice and co-operated in being photographed. So, however you describe it, and whatever its technical shortcomings, this pic very faithfully caught her likeness at the time.
