the cloister of the abbey - a photo on Flickriver

            In the heart of the Luberon (Provence, France), in a landscape of breathtaking beauty, stands the Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks and surrounded by a landscape of lavender fields and green hills.
You can find a lot of information about the Abbey and the history of the building. However, when you visit this place and walk through the nice little cloister, there is another story that tells you.
The story of a time when some men and women were looking for a place of peace and serenity to dedicate their whole lives to the glory of the Lord. The story of sacrifice to tow main tasks "ora et labora", pray and work.
A place of sustainability throughout the seasons living from the fruits of nature and its labor. A place in harmony with nature, respecting it in total austerity.
A small garden with medicinal plants cultivated with care to have natural remedies to treat common illnesses.
An enveloping atmosphere that invites reflection and contemplation.
Sometimes, it is not necessary to visit great churches and cathedrals to understand why men wanted to dedicate these big structures to the glory of the Lord. The most important thing is not material but spiritual and this is the story you can see in the Abbey of Senanque.
