10 27 24 / Classical Glass - a photo on Flickriver

             ...but for how long?

With the never-ending developments and delays of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT the adjacent Eglinton Subway Station has been also undergoing renovations and to the detriment of the station's historical value.

Construction began of Canada's first Subway in 1949 and opening in 1954. Over the past six decades, additional stations and new lines would be opened. But in all this time, Eglinton's Subway platform has largely been preserved, or perhaps more accurately, ignored. The Toronto Transit Commission has never seen it's heritage as being all that important.

The platform level at this station was clad in copious amounts of   Vitrolite 'Pearl Gray' pigmented glass tiles, seen here. Over the past 60 years, damaged tiles were replaced by using saved tiles from other stations that had been previously renovated and their gray tiles being removed, specifically Summerhill, Wellesley and Queen Stations.

As I walked along the platform this past Sunday, I was met with a collection of construction equipment and barriers, of which some that were protecting bare concrete walls and some with a new glass like wall coverings where the Vitrolite once was installed.

Small portions of the original stations design were still visible as we see here, hopefully they will be retained and maintained, although given the Toronto Transit Commission's track (pun intended) record, I'm concerned.
