National Parks Week - North Cascades

North Cascade Mountains, Washington

Since it is National Parks Week here in the U.S. I thought I would post a photo from each of the three national parks in my home state of Washington.

This one is from North Cascades National Park, and was taken from above Blue Lake (that hike was detailed in several posts last autumn, which can be seen in my North Cascades album), at an elevation of about 6600 feet/2000 meters. I was standing on a giant boulder, looking out at a section of the Okanagan subrange of the North Cascades that lies along the North Cascades Highway. These peaks range in height from about 7500-8000 feet (2286 to 2438 meters) tall and I've added notes to label a few of the more prominent ones. After a cloudy and foggy start to the day, the skies finally cleared and it was a lovely place to sit and enjoy the sunshine and soak in the spectacular mountain views.

This park is more remote than many of the U.S. national parks, with little in the way of infrastructure or visitor amenities (which likely contributes to it being one of the least-visited parks). I love the jagged peaks of the mountains here, which look very different from the Central and South Cascades.
