Despite the tongue tripping name bestowed upon these falls, they plummet 90 feet down with both grace and power, singing with a roaring voice that echoes through the mossy rocks. 

With an El Niño weather pattern wreaking havoc on our mountain snowpack in December, I opted for a waterfall hike instead of a snowshoe last weekend, on a trail tucked away in a small foothills town. I have often driven by this trailhead on my way out to Mount Rainier but this was the first time I have hiked here and there is always a special sense of anticipation that comes with visiting a place that my eyes and senses have not seen and experienced before.

The price of winter waterfall beauty in the Pacific NW is often paid in large quantities of slippery mud, and my hiking boots and pant legs could tell you all about that! It was worth every slip and slide and splatter though, as both sections of the falls that I visited were absolutely mesmerizing. I spent over an hour at the Middle Falls here, and though a few other people came and went during that time, for most of it I had them all to myself. So I could leisurely explore around them, lose myself in the sound of the music they were making, delight in the feel of the cold spray on my face, and take way too many photos from different locations and angles. Of which this one, for some reason, was my favorite even though it only captures a small part of them.

Note: For those who may wonder about such things, this was a handheld shot, no tripod involved. Taken from some rather slippery rocks at the base of the falls...
