SOMUA S35 (Pic 2)

            With high speed, thick steel casting, and a powerful 47mm gun capable of penetrating German Panzer III armor, the SOMUA S35 was the most advanced tank in the interwar-WWII French army.

Following the invasion of France in 1940, almost 300 S35s were captured and placed under German service as "Beutepanzer," captured foreign tanks. They fought on practically all fronts except Africa, from the Balkans to Russia to Normandy.

Today, most consider the tank's one-man turret its main drawback. It made the commander not only responsible for commanding but aiming and firing the main and secondary guns.
