Jökulsárlón

            Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon. Unlike most geological formations, whose age is usually measured in millions of years, Jökulsárlón is less than 100 years old.
It is part of the Vatnajokull glacier complex. The glacier receded from 1900 and around 1934 created Lake Jokulsarlon. In 1975 it had a surface area of only 8 km2, today it has an area of about 18 km2 and reaches a depth of 260 meters in some points.
