Port Blakely on a frozen winter morning

            Port Blakely, located on Bainbridge Island, WA, is only a short walk from my home, and one of the most peaceful places on the island. Once home to the great Hall Brothers Shipyard & Port, it was at one point the bustling economic center of Bainbridge, as well as the world’s largest sawmill under a single roof. Following a 1907 fire and decline in the local lumber industry, the town and the mill were demolished, leaving a large concrete shell once home to a mill employing nearly 1,200 people. Today the mill is a favorite spot among graffiti artists, lowly stoners, and many, many dog walkers. The park surrounding the mill contains many lovely places to sit and annoy a morning coffee, as well as a lovely bridge separating the old retention pond from the puget sound.
