Lisbon is a beautiful city that never ceases to amaze me even after many visits (this was my seventh!). It is quite remarkable how the pulse of the city has changed over the years.  When I first visited as a teenager in the late 50's and early 60's, Portugal had all of its overseas colonies. Lisbon was a vibrant city then, and one could feel that it played an important role in the world as the administrative centre of a vast empire.  In the 70's and 80's things had changed and the city was run down.  Many of the sidewalks were in a state of disrepair, parks and public places were dirty and uncared-for; one could feel the exhaustion of the entire country as a result of the colonial wars in Africa which consumed so much of its energy.    Things started to turn around in 1986 when Portugal joined the European Community and now in 2009, Lisbon is once again the beautiful and buoyant metropolis that the Portuguese can be proud to have as capital.
