Paris river scene

            September 14, 2012 was not the best day to walk around Paris to take pictures. It was overcast and threatening to rain. But we did that anyway!  

This is a shot of the south channel of La Seine as it flows pass Ile de la Cité. The shot was taken from Pont Neuf (meaning "New Bridge") which, despite its name, is the oldest bridge to span the river dating back to 1606.  In the distance we see Pont Saint-Michel.  

The Seine averages 9.5 m in depth as it flows across Paris and is easily navigable.  Since the 1800's, the depth has been maintained more or less constant by a system of locks.  The water quality used to be bad, but has been improving in recent years.  In 2009 it was announced that the Atlantic salmon had returned to the Seine.  

The Seine watershed is nearly 80 thousand square kilometres and includes other well know rivers such as La Marne, Yonne, l'Eure and l'Oise.
