Lava Heron - a photo on Flickriver

Lava Heron

            My heron obsession just went international!

Even lava herons have that little shrug as if the water is shockingly cold- but of course he is lying, as lava herons are found only in the Galapagos. The rusty shade in his chest makes me wonder if he's a young guy- or maybe the bright sun reflecting off the ocean spray made the normally muted colours show. 

Is the lava heron a distinct species, or a subspecies/ colour morph of the striated heron? While the experts argue, I will just appreciate their seemingly distinct brand of the heron talent to be simultaneously goofy and elegant.
